THE CITY OF OKLAHOMA –

Although COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations tend to drop in Oklahoma, health officials say their nurses are coming out.

“The nationwide nursing shortage is a problem in all hospitals, and there are not enough students in nursing programs to stop the bleeding,” said Dr. Woody Jenkins.

Jenkins told the Healthier Oklahoma meeting on Tuesday that the national problem of staff shortages was occurring in his town – Stillwater.

“Since the start of the year, 50 RNs have left Stillwater Medical Center. Our RN turnover is over 20%,” Jenkins said.

With staff shortages at Stillwater Medical Center, Jenkins said morale was low due to burnout and unmatched workloads.

“Some nurses have left the hospital for more lucrative trips as a nurse, retirement or other non-bedside nursing jobs,” he said. “Others are leaving the profession altogether – working in retail, food service, being nannies or going back to school for ‘something else’.”

Meanwhile, Dr David Kendrick said Oklahoma sees a continuing downward trend in COVID-19 cases over the seven-day average.

“You can see that all age groups tend to go down, which is a good sign,” Kendrick said.
